Manchester City are the reigning benchmark of English club football and one of the defining forces of the modern game. Under manager Pep Guardiola since 2016, City have redefined positional play in the Premier League, winning six titles in seven seasons and completing an English treble in 2022-23 that culminated in a first Champions League trophy against Inter Milan.
Founded in 1880 as St Mark's (West Gorton), the club was renamed Manchester City in 1894. Long overshadowed by Manchester United, City won the League Championship in 1937 and 1968 and lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970. The 2008 takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group transformed the club into a global superclub. Titles followed under Roberto Mancini (2012), Manuel Pellegrini (2014) and — most prolifically — Pep Guardiola.
City remain the pre-season favourites for a domestic title as Guardiola builds his rebuilt midfield around Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden. Erling Haaland continues to lead the line after his record-breaking debut season, and the summer additions have deepened rather than reshaped a squad that has won six of the last seven Premier League titles.
Pep Guardiola — in charge since 2016. Widely regarded as the most influential manager of the modern era. Previous roles at Barcelona and Bayern Munich delivered three league titles at each club, and his positional-play framework is now the reference tactical model in the sport.
Opened in 2002 for the Commonwealth Games and reconfigured for football in 2003. Currently undergoing a north stand expansion that will lift capacity beyond 60,000.
Structured, possession-based football with high positional discipline. City typically play in a 4-3-3 or 3-2-4-1 build-up, with inverted full-backs supporting the double pivot, the front three occupying half-spaces, and Haaland running the last line. High press with immediate counter-press on turnovers.
