Bukayo Saka

Bukayo Saka

Right Winger · England

Bukayo Saka is Arsenal's most important player and — with [Jude Bellingham](/players/jude-bellingham) and Harry Kane — one of the three pillars of the England national team. He was the first Arsenal academy graduate since Cesc Fàbregas to become the club's undisputed talisman by his early twenties, and he has been PFA Young Player of the Year twice.

Biography

Saka was born in Ealing, west London, in 2001 to Nigerian parents and came through Arsenal's Hale End academy. He debuted for the senior team at seventeen under Unai Emery, initially as a left-back cover for the injured Sead Kolašinac, and became a first-team regular under Mikel Arteta the following season.

Career evolution

Saka has played four different positions in a professional shirt: left-back, left wing-back, left winger and — since 2021 — inverted right winger. Arteta's decision to move him permanently to the right, where he cuts inside on his stronger left foot, coincided with his rise from promising talent to England starter. Since 2022-23 he has posted double-digit goals and assists in every full season.

Tactical role changes

Under Emery he was a left-sided full-back / winger asked to defend first. Under Arteta from 2020-21 he was a left winger with defensive responsibilities. From 2021-22 he became an inverted right winger with almost no defensive coverage, and Arsenal built the right side around him — Ben White overlapping outside him, Martin Ødegaard combining inside him. That structure remains the club's most reliable attacking pattern.

Signature performances

Two goals in Arsenal's 3-0 Champions League win over Sporting CP in 2024. A goal and an assist against Manchester City at the Etihad in the 2023-24 title race. A hat-trick against Sheffield United. A commanding Euro 2024 quarter-final performance, including the winning penalty in the shootout against Switzerland — a moment of personal redemption after his missed penalty at Euro 2020.

Playing style

Two-footed, technically clean and physically strong — he wins more than half of the ground duels a winger of his size should not win. His finishing has improved every season since 2020, and he is now one of the best right-footed set-piece takers in England. His crossing and cutback numbers are among the top three wingers in the [Premier League](/guides/premier-league-complete-guide).

Impact on club and country

He is the reason Arsenal are back in the [Champions League](/guides/uefa-champions-league-complete-guide) knockout phase after a five-year absence. For England, he is one of the first names on the teamsheet under Gareth Southgate and now Thomas Tuchel, having been ever-present in the last three major tournament runs.

Records and milestones

Two-time PFA Young Player of the Year (2021-22 and 2022-23). Youngest Arsenal player to reach 50 Premier League goals. FA Cup winner in 2020, at nineteen. Reached the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals with England; started every knockout match at both.

Legacy and influence

Saka has become the model example of Arsenal's Hale End academy, which the club used to justify long-term investment in youth development after a period of over-reliance on transfers. His public dignity after the racist abuse that followed his Euro 2020 penalty miss also made him a national figure well beyond football.

Common misconceptions

He is not a "counterattacking" winger. Most of his goal contributions come against low blocks, thanks to his short-combination play with Ødegaard. He is also not injury-prone by winger standards — his minutes played in the Premier League from 2020 to 2024 were among the highest for any attacker in the league.
