La Liga is the top division of Spanish professional football and one of the historically dominant leagues in world football, thanks to Real Madrid and Barcelona's long stranglehold on European trophies. Officially LaLiga EA Sports since 2023-24, it is the most-watched league in more than 100 markets outside Europe and remains the technical standard-bearer for possession-based football at the elite level.

The 2025-26 LaLiga campaign features Real Madrid defending their crown against a Barcelona side that returned to the summit last term under Hansi Flick, while Atlético Madrid remain the third giant of the modern era. Below the top three, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Villarreal and Real Betis form a competitive European-chasing tier. The season runs from mid-August to the last weekend of May.

20 clubs play each other home and away for 38 rounds. Three points for a win, one for a draw. The champion is the team with the most points; head-to-head record is the primary tiebreaker in Spain (unlike goal difference elsewhere). The top four qualify for the Champions League, fifth enters the Europa League, and sixth qualifies for the Conference League play-off round.

The bottom three clubs are relegated to Segunda División. They are replaced by the top two Segunda sides plus the winner of a play-off between the teams finishing third to sixth in the second tier. The Spanish pyramid is fully connected and financial fair play rules enforced by LaLiga itself have historically been among the strictest in European football.

LaLiga was founded in 1929 and has been contested every year except during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). Real Madrid and Barcelona have won 62 of the 93 titles, though Atlético Madrid, Athletic Club and Valencia have each enjoyed championship periods. The 2000s and 2010s were defined by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's parallel dominance — a duopoly of Ballon d'Or winners that shaped a generation of tactical evolution across the continent.
