Overview
La Liga is the top division of Spanish professional football and one of the historically dominant leagues in world football, thanks to Real Madrid and Barcelona's long stranglehold on European trophies. Officially LaLiga EA Sports since 2023-24, it is the most-watched league in more than 100 markets outside Europe and remains the technical standard-bearer for possession-based football at the elite level.
This season
The 2025-26 LaLiga campaign features Real Madrid defending their crown against a Barcelona side that returned to the summit last term under Hansi Flick, while Atlético Madrid remain the third giant of the modern era. Below the top three, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Villarreal and Real Betis form a competitive European-chasing tier. The season runs from mid-August to the last weekend of May.
Competition format
20 clubs play each other home and away for 38 rounds. Three points for a win, one for a draw. The champion is the team with the most points; head-to-head record is the primary tiebreaker in Spain (unlike goal difference elsewhere). The top four qualify for the Champions League, fifth enters the Europa League, and sixth qualifies for the Conference League play-off round.
Qualification, promotion & relegation
The bottom three clubs are relegated to Segunda División. They are replaced by the top two Segunda sides plus the winner of a play-off between the teams finishing third to sixth in the second tier. The Spanish pyramid is fully connected and financial fair play rules enforced by LaLiga itself have historically been among the strictest in European football.
Key clubs
- **Real Madrid** — Record 36-time Spanish champions and current holders.
- **Barcelona** — 27-time champions, philosophy defined by La Masia and possession football.
- **Atlético Madrid** — Diego Simeone's low-block defensive template remains a domestic and European force.
- **Athletic Club** — Basque-only recruitment policy unique in top-flight European football.
- **Sevilla** — Seven-time Europa League champions and the competition's record winners.
History
LaLiga was founded in 1929 and has been contested every year except during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). Real Madrid and Barcelona have won 62 of the 93 titles, though Atlético Madrid, Athletic Club and Valencia have each enjoyed championship periods. The 2000s and 2010s were defined by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's parallel dominance — a duopoly of Ballon d'Or winners that shaped a generation of tactical evolution across the continent.

Records and milestones
Real Madrid lead La Liga's honours list with 36 championships, followed by Barcelona with 27 and Atlético Madrid with 11. Athletic Club and Real Madrid are the only two clubs never relegated from the top flight since the league's foundation in 1929.
Lionel Messi's 474 La Liga goals — including a single-season record of 50 in 2011-12 — is the modern benchmark. Cristiano Ronaldo's 311 in fewer appearances gives him the highest goals-per-game rate in the league's history. Both totals redefine what individual output can look like in a first division.
Broadcasting and revenue
La Liga's centralised broadcasting model, introduced in 2015, distributes roughly €2 billion per season across the two divisions. The formula uses 50% equal-share, 25% based on the last five years' sporting results, and 25% based on social media following and stadium attendance. That mechanism has narrowed the gap between the top clubs and the rest without fully closing it.
International rights, sold territory by territory, add roughly €900 million per year — with the United States, the United Kingdom and MENA the three largest markets. ESPN carries the U.S. rights through 2029.
How to watch worldwide
In Spain, DAZN and Movistar Plus+ share domestic rights. ESPN carries the U.S. rights on ESPN+ and linear channels. Premier Sports covers the U.K. and Ireland. Most other markets have a single dedicated rights holder announced by La Liga before the season starts.
