What xGA is

Expected Goals Against (xGA) is a metric that estimates the quality of the chances a team concedes. Where Expected Goals (xG) measures the chances a team creates, xGA measures the chances it gives up. It answers the question: based on the shots they allowed, how many goals *should* this team have conceded?

How it works

xGA is built the same way as xG, just from the defending team's perspective. Every shot a team faces is assigned a probability of being scored — based on distance, angle, body part, type of chance and more. Add up the xG of every shot a team concedes over a match or season, and you get their xGA. A team with a low xGA is allowing few and low-quality chances; a high xGA means they are giving up lots of good ones.

Why xGA is useful

  • It measures defensive quality better than goals conceded. A team can concede few goals thanks to a hot goalkeeper or luck, while actually allowing many good chances — xGA reveals that.
  • It predicts future performance. Over a large sample, xGA is a better guide to how a defence will perform going forward than the raw goals-conceded number.
  • It separates the defence from the goalkeeper. If a team concedes far fewer goals than their xGA, it often means the goalkeeper is overperforming — useful for spotting unsustainable results in either direction.

xGA vs goals conceded

Goals conceded is what actually happened; xGA is what "should" have happened based on chance quality. The gap between them is revealing:

  • Goals conceded well below xGA: the defence is riding good goalkeeping or luck, and may regress (concede more soon).
  • Goals conceded well above xGA: the team is unlucky or has a poor goalkeeper, and may improve.

Used across a season, xGA gives a truer picture of defensive solidity than the scoreline alone.

The limits of xGA

Like all expected-goals models, xGA has caveats. It is noisy over small samples — a single match's xGA means little; it needs many games to be meaningful. It also doesn't capture everything a good defence does, such as preventing dangerous situations from becoming shots at all. A team that stops attacks before they reach a shot may have a low xGA precisely because of good defending that the metric can't directly see.
