Origin

Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana was born in Esplugues de Llobregat, on the western edge of Barcelona, in July 2007. He joined La Masia aged seven and made his first-team debut aged 15 years and 290 days — the youngest player to do so in Barcelona's history.

The technical profile

Yamal is a left-footed right winger with the balance and change-of-direction ability of a smaller, older player. His shot profile is dominated by curling attempts into the far post from the half-space — the classic Messi shot — but the more distinctive part of his game is how early he lifts his head when receiving the ball, allowing him to release quickly instead of dwelling.

Why Flick built around him

Hansi Flick's decision to make Yamal the primary attacking outlet on Barcelona's right side changed the team's balance almost immediately. With Yamal drawing two defenders in one-versus-one situations, Pedri and Raphinha gain a free half-space, and the left-back can push higher without leaving the defensive shape exposed.

Euro 2024 breakthrough

Yamal's tournament with Spain in Germany was the accelerator moment: goal in the semi-final, decisive contributions in the quarter-final and Final, and the Young Player of the Tournament award. He was 17 for the entire competition.

The next 18 months

Yamal will be central to Spain's World Cup 2026 build-up and — if his physical development continues on trajectory — will be one of the two or three most valuable players in world football by the tournament's opening whistle.
